How to Easily Recover a WordPress Site After a Crash

Over the years, we have seen thousands of BlogVault customers needing to recover their websites under two circumstances. The first situation is when something is broken on their website but still loads; and the second is when the site doesn’t load at all.

If the site still loads, restoring a backup is easy and takes a few clicks. However, when the site doesn’t load at all, we ask for FTP credentials to restore the backup.

With our new Emergency Connector, you can restore or recover your website with a click, regardless of whether it loads or not. There is no need to look for FTP credentials, or mess around with your hosting account to set up FTP.

In this article, we talk about how the Emergency Connector works.

What is the Emergency Connector?

The Emergency Connector is a small PHP script that we add to the root folder of your website, along with the wp-config.php and wp-load.php files. If your site is not loading, BlogVault will connect to this script to recover your WordPress site.

The script looks like this:

bv_connector_{{random_string}}.php

When WordPress has completely crashed, none of the plugins are accessible, including the BlogVault plugin. However, the Emergency Connector is operational. Therefore, we can connect to the script to recover your WordPress website without using FTP.

Why is the Emergency Connector better than using FTP?

Before the Emergency Connector, FTP was necessary to restore your website. We connected directly to your server because the website was inaccessible. During the time of restore, you needed to share your FTP login details, and only then could the restore take place.

In our experience, very few website admin have FTP login details easily available. Either you have to log into your hosting account to find them, or in the case of agencies, contact the client to get them.

Secondly, FTP is a slow and unreliable way to copy the backup data to your site. This is especially painful when you consider large sites with GBs of data. Over the years, we have worked to make FTP as reliable and fast as possible, but it still doesn’t work as seamlessly as a normal restore.

When the website is not loading, all you want is to recover it as fast as possible. The Emergency Connector ensures that your recovery process is fast, reliable, seamless and secure, and you can minimise website downtime as far as possible.

Is the Emergency Connector secure?

Yes, the Emergency Connector is secure. The script is secured at multiple levels, using the best practices of the industry. If you see the script in your website files, do not be alarmed

Additionally, some security plugins may show a warning. However, this is nothing to worry about, as many of these tools generate false alarms often due to imperfect scanning algorithms.

Conclusion

The Emergency Connector ensures that your site recovery process is easy, even in the worst case scenarios. It will save you time and stress, and minimize the impact of a crashed site considerably.
