FeatureBulletProof Backups

The most reliable WordPress backups

A backup that fails silently is worse than none, because you only find out when you need it. BlogVault is built so backups don’t fail: they finish on any host, even large sites and cheap shared hosting, and every copy is stored encrypted away from your server. That’s why 400,000+ sites trust it, with over 1 million successful restores.

Back up sites of 100 GB and more, on any host

Large sites are where most backup plugins fail: the host blocks big files, limits requests or stops a process that runs too long. BlogVault sends only what changed, in small pieces, and picks up where it left off if it’s interrupted. Here is one nightly backup finishing on a host with strict limits.

  • If one method is blocked, it tries another

When your host blocks one way of sending data, the backup switches to a different method instead of failing overnight.

  • Data is sent in small pieces

Changed files are sent in small requests that hosts accept, and the backup waits whenever the host asks it to slow down.

  • Interrupted backups carry on

If a request times out, the backup resumes from where it stopped. It doesn’t start again from the beginning.

  • The heavy work happens on our servers

Putting the backup together, encrypting it and storing the copies all happen on BlogVault’s servers. Your server only checks for changes and sends them.

Why BlogVault doesn’t slow your site down

Most backup plugins build the backup on the same server that runs your website, so your visitors compete with the backup for memory and disk. BlogVault moves that work to its own servers.

[The usual way]

A zip-based plugin

  1. Read every file on the site, every timeYour server
  2. Compress it all into one zip archiveYour server
  3. Write the archive to your diskYour server
  4. Upload it to storage, then delete itYour server

Zip-based plugins can work well on a small site with a quiet server. Problems start on busy shared hosting, or once a site grows larger than the host allows one process to handle.

Many web hosts ban backup plugins that create zip files, because building a zip uses the same server resources your visitors need. BlogVault doesn’t create zip files on your server, so it works where those plugins are banned.

What a BlogVault backup includes

Every backup is a complete copy of your site: all files and the whole database. Some tools only back up the database, which isn’t enough to rebuild a site.

▸ You don’t choose what to include, so nothing important gets left out by mistake.

Incremental backups: only changes are copied

The first backup copies your whole site. After that, BlogVault copies only the files and database rows that changed since the last backup. That keeps each backup small and fast, even on a large site.

18,703 files checked · 12 changed
First backupThe whole site

Every file and table is copied once. On a large site this can take a while, but it only happens the first time.

Every backup after thatOnly the changes

BlogVault tracks what changed and copies only that: in this example, 12 files instead of 18,703.

Backup questions

Will backups slow my site down?
No, not in a way your visitors will notice. The plugin only finds what changed and sends it in small pieces; building, encrypting and storing the backup happen on our servers. Reading changed files does use a little of your server, but far less than creating a zip file.
My host bans backup plugins. Will BlogVault work?
Usually, yes. Hosts ban plugins that build zip archives on the server, and BlogVault doesn’t build one. It runs on 5,000+ web hosts, and WP Engine and Pantheon are partners. The first backup runs without a credit card, so you can find out on your own host before you pay.
How often does it back up?
Every 24 hours on Personal, every 12 hours on Business and hourly (customisable) on WooCommerce, which also captures orders in real time. You can run on-demand backups too, before an update: 3, 10 or 25 a day, by plan.
What exactly is backed up?
The whole site: WordPress core files, plugins, themes, media uploads and every table in the database, including posts, pages, comments, settings and the tables your plugins add. There is nothing to configure, so nothing gets left out by accident.
How large a site can it back up?
Plans cover sites 20 GB, 50 GB and 100 GB. On a large site the first backup takes longest, because everything moves once; after that only the changes do. If your site is bigger, talk to us and we’ll size it with you.
Where are backups stored, and for how long?
Off your server, encrypted, in EU data centres under GDPR: 9 copies across 2 storage providers. Backups are kept for 30 days, 90 days or 365 days, depending on the plan.
Can I keep backups in my own Dropbox or S3 bucket?
No. Storage is included in the price and managed by us. That is deliberate: if the keys to your storage were kept on your site, a hacker who got into the site could delete the backups too. BlogVault’s storage keys are never on your site.

More from BlogVault

The same engine backs up, restores, stages and moves your site. Here is where it helps next.

  • Restores

    One-click restores

Check a backup works before you restore it, then bring back the whole site or only one plugin, even when the site won’t load.

    How restores work
  • Data security

    Enterprise-grade data security

Backups are encrypted and stored with two providers in EU data centres, so they’re safe even if your site is hacked or your host fails.

    How backups are stored
  • Staging

    Staging sites in one click

A staging site is a private copy of your site for testing updates. Try changes there, then push the ones that work to your live site.
