A migration, as it actually runs

An agency team moves a client’s live WooCommerce store to a new host from inside BlogVault. Orders keep arriving; nothing changes for visitors until DNS does. Migrate Guru, the free plugin, makes the same one-off move.

Hartley’s go-live is Friday. Can we move the store today without taking it down? They’re still taking orders.

Priya Nair · WordPress dev · 09:42

Yes. I’ll migrate from last night’s backup, check it on the new host, and we only switch DNS when they sign off.

Connect your site

The plugin syncs the site you are moving. Nothing on the live site changes while it runs.

Copy assembled off-site

Files and database are put together on our servers, not on the one your site runs on.

URLs rewritten as it moves

Search and replace runs across the database and config files, serialised data included.

Visitors see no change

Your origin server keeps serving traffic instead of zipping an archive it cannot finish.

Complete before DNS

The site is finished and browsable on the new host before the domain points at it.

You pick the moment

DNS moves last, not first. If something looks wrong, nothing has changed for visitors.

Any host, any domain

The destination can be a new host, a new address, or development to production.

A way back

The backup taken before the move stays in your history, whichever way the day goes.

Migration, end to end

How a migration runs

Four steps, and only the last one is yours to time.

Install the plugin and connect

The plugin goes on the site you are moving and syncs. Nothing on the live site changes while it runs.

[Destination]

Point it at the new home

Enter the destination host’s details, or a new domain. The destination can be any host you are moving to.

Who it is for
[Copy]

The work runs on our servers

Files and database are assembled off-site, so the migration never loads the server your site is running on.

Check it, then move DNS

URLs and serialised data are rewritten for you. The site is live on the new host before the domain moves.

Common questions

What the migration covers

Eight things that decide whether a move is painless or a weekend.

  • Migrate to a new host

The complete site is copied to the new server — files, database, the lot — with no manual work at either end.

  • Migrate to a new domain

A development copy to production, or production to a staging site. The same single step either way.

  • Selective migration

Move only what you need: choose the plugins, themes, WordPress files or database tables before it starts.

  • Search and replace, built in

URLs in the database and config files are rewritten as the site moves, serialised data included. No second plugin.

  • Zero downtime

The site is built on the new host first. You switch DNS when it checks out, not before.

  • Any web host

5,000+ hosts are supported: shared, managed WordPress, country-specific, and servers you run yourself.

  • Large sites

Migrate Guru clones sites as large as 200 GB, where a live-server import would hit its limits and fail.

  • Multisite networks

Subdomain and subdirectory networks both migrate, with no add-on and no special handling for serialised data.

Any web host

2 million sites migrated, across 5,000 web hosts

Shared hosting, managed WordPress platforms, country-specific hosts, and servers you run yourself. Major hosts use this engine for their own migration plugin.

Start a migration

The engine doesn’t change with the job. One site, a client portfolio, or a 200 GB store.

  • [Agencies]

Move a client portfolio without a maintenance window

Runs from the same dashboard that holds every client site, to any host they are moving to.

  • [Hosts]

The technology behind other migration plugins

LiquidWeb, Pantheon and Cloudways use this engine for their own WordPress migration tools.

  • [Stores]

Move a WooCommerce store between hosts

Orders keep arriving while the copy is built. The address only changes when DNS switches, at a time you pick.

  • [Large sites]

Media libraries that break ordinary importers

Ordinary migrations fail on live-server import limits. Assembling the site off-site removes that ceiling.

“The smoothest & fastest migration of a WP website! Once we installed the plugin & clicked migrate, nothing else was required. Our site had been migrated, lock stock & barrel.”

“I've been migrating WP sites for almost 15 years and it has never been so easy. Just paste the key from the destination and off you go.”

Migration questions

Will my site go down during the migration?
No. The site is copied to the destination host while the live site keeps serving traffic. Nothing changes for visitors until you point DNS at the new host, and that is your decision, made after you have checked the new copy.
How long does a migration take?
It depends on size, but a 1 GB site is typically cloned in under 30 minutes. Because the work runs on our servers rather than yours, a slow or busy origin server does not stall it.
How large a site can be moved?
Migrate Guru moves sites as large as 200 GB. Large migrations usually fail because of import limits on the live server, which is exactly the step that is avoided here.
Do I need an add-on for Multisite or serialised data?
No. Subdomain and subdirectory networks both migrate as they are, and search and replace handles serialised data without a second plugin.
Do I need storage space for the migration?
No. The copy is held on our servers during the move and erased once it completes.
Which hosts are supported?
Over 5,000, from shared hosting to managed WordPress platforms to servers you run yourself. Several hosts use this same engine for their own migration plugin.

Why stop at migrations

The same engine moves a site, keeps a copy of it, and puts it back — whichever one you need next.

  • Staging

Rehearse the change before it is live

A staging copy runs on our servers rather than your host, so a theme swap, a plugin update or a rebuild can be tried where nothing is at stake. Push it back when it is right.

    Read the guide
  • Backups

Nine encrypted copies, off your host

Every backup is stored away from your server, across two storage providers. A host that fails or is compromised never takes the copy with it, and restores run from our machines.

  • WooCommerce

Every order captured as it happens

A store keeps taking orders between scheduled backups. Each one is noted the moment it lands and collected continuously, so no change is missed when you need to go back.
